Policy on Training

Policy Training

We practice "outcome based" training in the Facilities Management Services Division.  That is, each trainee is expected to come back from training with clear and definable tools which will help him/her perform duties more efficiently or with more skill.

Thus, all trainees should be asked to demonstrate their new skills by sharing their recently found knowledge/skills within the unit or entire department which ever is more applicable.  Managers will then be able to determine the effectiveness of a particular training session and whether it would be worthwhile to repeat.

Your training specialist suggests, at the beginning of each fiscal year, make a prioritized list of training needs within your unit.  Share that list with the training specialist so the specialist can help direct you to training opportunities.

Contract Training

A viable option to sending numerous people to the same out-of-town training event is to hire a trainer to come to our facility.  Contact the training specialist with such requests.

Professional Conferences

Attendance at professional conferences must be approved by the Director and will normally be limited to one per year per person.

Policy on Travel

Outside of professional conferences, a good portion of training money has been spent on travel.  The purpose of these guidelines is to better manage training dollars, redirecting money spent on travel to direct training in and around Atlanta.

Training will be confined to the Atlanta area unless the needed workshop/seminar will not be offered in the area for six months.  Should you find it necessary to travel to a training event, the following guidelines will be in effect:

Airline travel must be arranged through the training specialist.  Hotel accommodations will be approved only for the days of the training event, plus one night if airline flights do not accommodate event scheduling.  We may request that you travel on a weekend in order to qualify for lower rates; no additional reimbursement for personal time spent will be authorized.

Training Request Procedures

All outsource training (i.e. training associated with a fee, regardless if it is given within the university or not) must be approved.  Complete the attached training request form and forward to the Training Specialist's office.
